Electric Toothbrush – it’s great for your teeth!

For this dental insight, we’re discussing electric toothbrushes. Are they really that good? Why do they make a difference to your oral health? How can this be sustainable for our planet? How can we brush our teeth well? Stay tuned as we discuss all of the above.

Manual vs Electric

Both manual and electric toothbrushes can effectively clean teeth, however electric toothbrushes have been found to generally remove more plaque, and are easier to use (e.g. for those with limited mobility).

Electric toothbrushes produce thousands of strokes per minute, many more than manual brushing, which increases the efficiency of your tooth brushing routine. From increased plaque removal, to reduced cases of gingivitis, an electric toothbrush should definitely be an option for all patients to consider.

At the end of the day, the best toothbrush will be whichever is best for your mouth and budget, and that you can use consistently.

Sustainability

Our planet and environment are always considered here at Sandygate. Whilst electric toothbrushes do have plastic components, batteries and motors, we offer solutions to help you be as planet-friendly as possible.

  1. Buy sustainable brands – there are several brands out there that you can consider, that offer products made with recycled plastic
  2. Only replace when needed – your electric toothbrush, if looked after well, should last a long time. You don’t need a high-tech model to acheive great results.
  3. Recycle your electric toothbrush heads – we offer in-Practice dental waste recycling which includes electric toothbrush heads. Please bring these in whenever you’re passing!

How to brush our teeth well

Brushing teeth with an electric toothbrush requires a different technique:

  • Place the brush at a 45-degree angle where the teeth meet the gums.
  • Gently guide the brush from tooth to tooth.
  • Let the brush do the work — do not scrub hard.
  • Make sure you clean all surfaces of every tooth.
  • Brush for two minutes.
  • Change the brush head every three months.

Remember, good brushing technique and brushing twice a day matters more than whether you have an electric or manual toothbrush.
