With patients often struggling with what to do to encourage toothbrushing, we’ve put together 5 toothbrushing tips for kids, to help you feel empowered to support your child/children and their oral health.
We know it can feel like a daunting task to have your children brush their teeth. We offer a non-judgmental space for you and your child to attend appointments, and receive tailored oral health advice and care.
1 – Start Early!
The first of our toothbrushing tips for kids – starting early. Brushing your baby’s gums and teeth will help set the habit that daily brushing needs to be a part of their routine. We recommend that you start brushing before they even get teeth – it helps make it feel more normal for them.
2 – Make it Fun!
For when your child is resistant to brushing their teeth, try making it fun! From reward/sticker charts, to silly toothbrushing songs, anything to help your child make brushing their teeth a fun part of the day. Often our patients describe how they brush their teeth all together as a family, which also helps with the acclimatisation and sense of routine.
3 – Good Brushing Technique
Your oral health is determined by what happens between appointments – a solid oral health routine makes such a different. For kids, we recommend that you use a suitable sized toothbrush, a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, use small gentle circular movements, and brush all surfaces of the teeth including along the gumline.
4 – Spit, Don’t Rinse!
Using fluoride toothpaste has been proven to help prevent dental decay. The longer this stays on your child’s teeth, the better! That’s why we encourage all our patients, no matter what age, to avoid rinsing after toothbrushing. Instead, spit out your toothpaste, and resist the urge to rinse!
5 – Choose The Best Dental Care
We would always recommend to all patients that you choose a dental practice that is the best fit for you and your family; a dental practice that can provide tailored support for your child. From anxiety, to sensory overwhelm, it can sometimes be difficult for children to feel comfortable and confident visiting the dentist. This is why at Sandygate Dental, we pride ourselves on our ability to make adjustments to our care and services to best suit each individual.
